It’s an overcast Thursday evening and I’m at The Plantation Garden Theatre. In a few hours, an audience of locals and tourists will make its way into the expansive theatre for the first “Cultural Rhythms” show of 2016. The place is lively with stagehands setting up projectors and speakers, and caterers getting dinner ready. When Dawn-Lisa arrives, she immediately thrusts herself into the midst of the action. “I’m coming to you now,” she says, before going to make sure that everything is in place. In between periodic phone calls, she answers employee concerns, lends a hand when needed and, when she got back to me, fielded questions for the interview. She isn’t flustered, however. She’s used to this.

I used to be very much focused on success in the traditional sense of the word, but now I am more focused on a holistic type of success.” ~Heather Barker

In our society, leaving the comfort of a 9-5 to start your own business is usually met with negative feedback. This pushback, along with other fears, can deter ones dreams. Nine times out of ten, those who cower to the cynics spend the rest of their life asking themselves What if?

Claire Dottin knows about this all too well. The 31-year old aesthetician faced those same trepidations head on when she decided to step out in faith and quit her steady job as a designer – and she hasn’t looked back since.

Initially looking to enter the field of architecture, Claire changed course and followed her passion for art – studying and gaining experience in Graphic Design.

Flexibility, the key to adapt- Lana Sealy

Web-01

By Ryan Wills
The body is an amazing tool and it is susceptible to both physical and mental discomforts. Healing via movement as a natural remedy is something that many overlook. Lana Sealy, owner of Body Mekanix knows this all too well. Her practice of moving mindfully is a fusion of her knowledge of movement: A combination of Dance, Pilates, Yoga, Thai yoga bodywork and meditation backed by her understanding of anatomy and kinesiology.

At 17 she left Barbados to go to Miami to attend the New World School of the Arts and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance. There, she was introduced to Pilates and physio therapy as part of the programme which helped her better understand the correlation between body and movement. She later danced professionally with the Merce Cunningham Reparatory Understudy Group in New York for 3 years. She did her full Pilates certification with the Kane School, prior to moving home. Since then she has also been certified as a Pilates for Buff Bones Instructors qualified to work specifically with Osteoporosis. I had the chance to sit down with Lana and hear her story.
